Mitsubishi’s next ‘Evo’ could be an electric SUV

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has revived its Evolution high-performance line with a fully-electric crossover, revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The e-Evolution Concept is the first car to get the badge since the tenth-generation Lancer Evolution was discontinued last year, and is the strongest hint yet that Mitsubishi may use this for its most powerful electric vehicles in future.

It uses three electric motors – one at the front, two at the rear – to provide four-wheel drive, and features a battery mounted under the cabin to keep the centre of gravity low. Electric, rather than hydraulic, brake calipers are said to enable tighter turn-in and more agile handling.

This isn’t only a showcase of Mitsubishi’s next-generation electric vehicle technology. The e-Evolution can read driver intent and skill, and combine that with data about road conditions ahead, providing coaching to help them get the most out of the car.

The concept is said to give a hint of what’s to come from Mitsubishi, now a part of the alliance with Renault and Nissan. Confirmed earlier this month, plug-in hybrid technology is to be shared with its partner companies, and used in C and D-segment vehicles, and a line-up of shared, scalable platforms, motors and batteries will be utilised across all three brands by 2022 – enabling 400-mile ranges and short charging times.
