UPS Adds 100 EVs To California Delivery Fleet

By / 13 years ago / International News / No Comments

The 100 walk-in delivery trucks, purchased from Electric Vehicles International in Stockton, California, have a range of 90 miles and represent the state’s largest EV roll-out, adding to 28 EVs in use in New York City and Europe.

Mike Britt, UPS's director of vehicle engineering, said the new vehicles suited the company’s delivery routes perfectly.

‘UPS's research and development of alternative technologies has determined it is time to explore electric drive systems within the short-range segment of our delivery fleet,’ he said.

‘This purchase is an important first step in supporting investment and advancement in electric vehicle technology. EVI's vehicle met our requirements in the test phase. Now we will operate these vehicles in the real world and help establish the future viability of this technology’

It’s not the first time UPS has tried electric vehicles. The company had a fleet in New York City in the 1930s, and has since tried a wide range of greener powertrains, covering more than 200 million miles on alternatively fuelled vehicles.
