Set to be operational by the end of 2015, the manufacturer expects to produce 100,000 battery packs per year, with contracts already in place with SAIC Motor, Qoros and a number of as-yet unnamed global manufacturers with factories in China.

Although the factory will only manufacture batteries for its domestic market, LG Chem produces battery cells for global clients including Ford, General Motors, Volvo, Hyundai, Renault and Kia.

The company is also working with Renault and the French Atomic Energy Agency (CEA) to develop the next generation of units for electric vehicles.
