Audi A5 gains plug-in hybrid with long electric range

Audi is boosting its A5 line-up with the addition of a long-range plug-in hybrid.

The A5 e-hybrid opens for orders on 7 May

The e-hybrid quattro will be available for both Avant and saloon models, priced from £48,950 and delivering up to 67 miles of range.

The Audi A5 launched late 2024 as the replacement to the A4, rebadged under the brand’s former naming convention that gave even numbers to fully electric cars and odd numbers to ICE models.

Alongside the pure combustion engine models debuted at the time, Audi is now offering a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

On sale from 7 May and starting customer deliveries mid-June, it’s powered by a 252hp 2.0 TFSI engine and a 142hp electric motor, giving a total output of 299hp along with acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

The 25.9kWh high-voltage battery is able to charge at 11kW AC, giving a full charge in 2.5 hours.

Audi said the long electric-only range means that customers can cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power.

The brand is also adding PHEV models to its A3, A6, Q5 line-ups.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said: “Our new generation of plug-in hybrid models offers a sporty and comfortable driving experience as well as a harmonious balance between performance and efficiency.”

The A5 e-hybrid is available in Technik, Sport, S Line and Edition 1 grades.
