Audi Unveils Urban EV Concept Study
It’s a similar idea to the Renault Twizy, due in 2012, but with a full roof and side windows to keep the elements out. The bodyshell is made from carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) to reduce weight and is driven by two electric motors, powered by a lithium ion battery.
Though totally different to anything else Audi manufactures, it features the brand’s distinctive family styling including an R8-style colour-contrasted side blade. The concept is based on an open-wheeled car, and has an advanced suspension setup for sporty handling, the carmaker said, while its low weight means it can match this with blistering straight-line pace.
Inside, the driver sits slightly further forward than the passenger to increase shoulder room, allowing for a narrower body and better inner-city manoeuvrability. A section of the roof, including the side windows, slides backwards turning it into a roadster.
A few weeks ahead of its reveal, Audi helped create a buzz about its electric concept by shooting a video in Berlin’s crowded Potsdamer Platz this week. The following video was captured by a passer-by.
