The DC Combi Fast Charge standard was developed in consensus with 190 global experts from the automotive, charging equipment, utilities industries and national laboratories, allowing multiple charging speeds from a single connection.

Eight manufacturers, comprising BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors and Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed to adopt the new connector, which will help standardise fast chargers and improve the speed at which infrastructure can be rolled out globally.

The first vehicles expected to feature the technology will be the Chevrolet Spark EV and BMW i3, with each manufacturer confirming that it offers an 80% charge in the predicted 20 minutes. Volkswagen has also confirmed that the electric version of its up! city car, due for a 2014 launch, will use the new connector.
