BMW unveils open-top plug-in hybrid sports car
The i8 Concept Spyder features a two-section folding roof panel, and uses pillarless scissor doors instead of the Coupe’s A-pillar hinged versions.
Under the skin, it uses the same 354bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain, with a 223bhp three-cylinder petrol engine powering the rear wheels and 131bhp electric motor at the front, shown under a semi-transparent V-shaped section in the bonnet.
As a result, the i8 Concept Spyder accelerates to 62mph in five seconds, but offers a 19-mile electric range from a two-hour charge, and returns 94mpg on the combined cycle.
