Cupra reveals Tavascan SUV coupé with 341-mile range
Cupra has taken the wraps off the long-awaited Tavascan, which arrives in 2024 to rival the Tesla Model Y.
The brand’s second fully electric model and its first all-electric SUV coupé, the Tavascan follows up on the 2019 concept car to deliver an “emotional and driving orientated SUV”.
Based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, it will be available with two power outputs. The entry-level version features a single motor delivering 286hp and a 77kWh battery pack with enough capacity for a WLTP range of around 341 miles.
The Tavascan VZ will sit above it, adding an extra motor to deliver 340hp and all-wheel drive. It’s able to hit 62mph from standing in 5.6 seconds while range stands at 321 miles from the same battery pack.
The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just under half an hour using a 135kW charging point and is able to add some 62 miles of range in as little as seven minutes.
Design remains faithful to the Tavascan concept presented at the IAA in Frankfurt 2019 and includes matrix LED headlights with a three-triangle signature, black A-pillars and 21-inch forged alloy wheels.
The Tavascan will also come with Dynamic Chassis Control Sport technology, sport suspension and progressive steering.
Onboard technology includes infotainment system with a 15-inch screen – the largest yet in a Cupra model – with a newly designed and developed Human Machine Interface (HMI). The Tavascan also integrates for the first time a high-fidelity 12-speaker audio sound system developed in collaboration with premium audio firm Sennheiser.
Designed and developed in Barcelona, the Tavascan will be produced at the Volkswagen Group’s Anhui factory in China and will have a yearly target of more than 70,000 cars sold when it goes on sale in 2024.
Cupra’s new model was revealed as it also announced sales of more than 300,000 cars since 2018, and a record Q1 in 2023 with over 46,500 units sold.
The brand also teased a new electric sports car with its virtual DarkRebel concept, combining sports car proportions with a shooting brake architecture to deliver “unfiltered Cupra DNA”.
