E.On accelerates ultra-rapid charging rollout
E.On is charging ahead on network expansion with plans for new ultra-rapid EV hubs at six sites across Scotland.
Located near cities such as Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling and Dunfermline, the hubs will feature 42 ultra-rapid chargers across all sites – each capable of delivering up to 150 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Announced a month after Transport Scotland opened its consultation on plans to drive charging expansion including through continued private sector investment, the new sites will join E.On’s first ultra-rapid hub in Scotland, already operational in Aberdeen, supporting Scotland’s transition to cleaner, greener transportation
With a combined charging capacity of 12.6MW, equivalent to the power needs of 40,000 UK homes, the chargers mark a significant milestone in E.On’s commitment to making electric driving more convenient.
The Aberdeen hub, already operational at Wellington Circle, south of the city, features 12 ultra-rapid charging bays, including four designed with additional accessibility for disabled users. It’s E.On’s most northerly EV charging station in the UK and strategically positioned at the gateway to the ‘Granite City’ to offer EV charging for drivers travelling in and out of the area.
While Scotland has the second-largest geographic EV charging network in the UK, the distances between chargers can create challenges for drivers. E.On’s new hubs will bridge critical gaps in infrastructure, making charging more accessible and enabling seamless journeys for EV drivers.
Dev Chana, managing director of E.On Drive Infrastructure UK, said: “Our goal is to make electric driving seamless and accessible for everyone, and these new charging hubs are a significant step forward in Scotland’s transition to cleaner transportation. But this is just the start.
“E.On operates thousands of charging points right across Europe and these new hubs for Scotland are the latest part of a bigger drive to expand our EV charging network across the UK, and another example of our commitment to creating greener infrastructure across the country.”
In 2024, E.On introduced 72 ultra-fast charging bays across England and Wales. These include Wales’ first ultra-fast public EV charging hub, which features 10 ultra-fast chargers, and a new site at Selby, just off the A63 in Yorkshire, with six 300kW charging points.
On the residential front, E.On has also installed around 8,000 home chargers and 2,000 chargers for small businesses, enabling over 50 million miles of EV charging in 2024 alone.
