On sale from £29,995, the new arrival is based on the best-selling petrol Puma and gains a new electric powertrain, delivering more choice for drivers.

The Hyundai Kona and Jeep Avenger rival features a 168hp electric motor, sourced from Ford’s converted Halewood plant that’s now producing components for its EVs. This is teamed up with a 43kWh battery, delivering up to 233 miles of WLTP combined range and some 325 miles of urban range.

It’s able to charge at up to 100kW DC, enabling a 10-80% charge in around 23 minutes. A maximum AC charge speed hasn’t been revealed yet. The Puma Gen-E is also good for a 0-62mph sprint in 8.0 seconds.

A simplified electronic shifter behind the steering wheel enables quick switching between drive, neutral and reverse and there’s selectable one-pedal driving.

Ford has expanded the Puma’s MegaBox boot storage space to become a massive GigaBox, giving up to 574 litres of room for luggage with the rear seats in place, and there’s a 43-litre ‘frunk’  in the space vacated by the petrol engine. The interior also features a sliding central armrest and raised centre console.

It’s marked out from the petrol version with a ‘shield’ design that replaces the conventional grille and takes inspiration from the Mustang Mach-E. The Puma Gen-E also gains sporty rear spoiler and bespoke alloy wheel designs to distinguish it and aid aerodynamics.

Two grades are available from launch: the £29,995 Select Model and the £31,995 Premium Model.

Standard equipment on the Select includes 17-inch alloys, a 12.8-inch driver’s display and a 12-inch central touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4 system, built-in Alexa and cloud-connected navigation, along with wireless phone integration – Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and wireless charging. Driver assistance features include lane keeping, wrong way alert, cross traffic alert with active braking and rear parking sensors.

The Premium grade uplifts to 18-inch alloys, power folding mirrors with puddle lamps and Puma logo, a B&O premium sound system, a hands-free tailgate and keyless entry.

The new Puma Gen-E joins the Capri, Mustang Mach-E and Explorer in Ford’s expanding electric line-up.

Deliveries of the Puma Gen-E start in spring 2025.
