Sold only in two-door coupe form, the ELR will be available across the United States from the start of next year, priced at $75,995 (£47,500) – twice the price of the Volt. But, with tax credits, Cadillac said this could come down to $68,495 (£42,800).

Although the drivetrain is shared with the Volt and Ampera, the ELR has a completely redesigned all-digital dashboard with wood grain and chrome trim, with all-LED exterior lighting and a new Regen on Demand feature, which allows the driver to increase energy regeneration using paddles on the steering wheel.

Cadillac has also included a Concierge Representative service, giving owners advice on battery care, home charging, servicing, news and updates, and Cadillac Shield with remote diagnostics, around-the-clock assistance and a premium maintenance service.

Bob Ferguson, senior vice president Global Cadillac, said: ‘The ELR is a unique blend of dramatic design with electric vehicle technology capable of total range in excess of 300 miles. ELR is also unique in that it will be offered nationwide within a luxury customer experience, with proven benefits and care extending from the shopping process all the way through the ownership experience.’
