First look at fully electric Range Rover as waiting list opens
JLR has given early details of its first fully electric Range Rover as a waiting list to pre-order the luxury flagship opens.
Due on sale next year, the Range Rover Electric will join its mild hybrid and plug-in electric hybrid siblings, “offering a breadth of options to meet our clients’ needs”.
It will be built on the brand’s flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture at its Solihull, UK site alongside the existing versions, as a new £70m underbody facility opens at the plant. The brand announced earlier this year that it’s investing £15bn over the next five years to accelerate its EV future.
Initial details reveal that the Range Rover Electric will deliver performance comparable to a flagship Range Rover V8 while retaining the model’s all-terrain capability since its first launch in 1950.
It’s also promised to be the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created, feature a new active road noise cancellation configuration and sound design, plus cabin comfort levels that will deliver “serene modern luxury”. Design will also feature “subtle” cues to reveal its all-electric drive.
Thomas Müller, executive director, product engineering at JLR, said: “The magic ingredients that underpin the success of Range Rover remain unchanged: timeless, reductionist design, a serene cabin and go-anywhere capability – but now offered with zero tailpipe emissions.
“And as repeated throughout history, the Range Rover will continue to set the standard. The first of its type. An electric luxury SUV that can deliver on the Range Rover promise. A true global luxury product, as yet unseen in the industry.”
Prototypes are now being put through testing – said to encompass one of the most rigorous engineering sign-off programmes ever and set to evaluate its capability spanning extreme temperatures, all conditions and terrains – including wading through up to 850mm deep water.
Other technical details reveal that it will utilise a, 800V architecture to enable rapid charging on public networks. JLR also promises a seamless electric ownership experience, delivering effortless charging, energy partnerships, software-over-the-air updates and intelligent technology to maximise range
Geraldine Ingham, managing Director, Range Rover, said: “Announcing the next stage in its modern luxury electrification journey, the first fully electric vehicle from Range Rover will amplify its modern luxury credentials. Its exemplary British design remains distinctive and unwavering, while its go-anywhere capability will ensure towing, wading and all-terrain technology surpass any other luxury electric SUV.”
