Ford has developed a full ‘blue light’ livery test version of its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV after considerable interest from UK police forces looking for greener solutions.

The initial concept is a demonstrator Mustang Mach-E Standard Range AWD model but Ford is also planning to offer an Extended Range version of its RWD and AWD models, bringing increased flexibility for police operations.

The electric Mach-E will provide police forces with one of the most economical and environmentally friendly cars on their fleets.

The model’s eco credentials have already been proven with a Guinness World Record for the lowest energy consumption on a journey in an electric car. It’s capable of 379 miles range between charges.

But the new Mach-E is also capable of 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds (GT version) and 111mph.

The conversion has been carried out by Safeguard SVP, Ford’s long-term partner to the blue light industry, and ensures that the power to operate the concept car’s blue lights, sirens and other high-tech equipment does not impact range.

“The vehicle range is uncompromised as the blue light equipment is being drawn from the vehicle’s 12V battery and not the drive battery,” said Terry Adams, blue light direct sales manager, Ford of Britain and Ireland.

“In future developments we will look to increase this battery capacity to allow for additional equipment to be fitted.”

Already seven forces have either tested the new vehicle or requested a full evaluation of a specially built concept car, including the Met, as well as Sussex, Surrey, South Wales, Dyfed Powys, Devon & Cornwall and Police Scotland forces.
