Developed to capture “the classic Capri spirit” from the iconic two-door coupé of the 1970s and 80s, it’s due to enter production in the coming weeks at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center alongside the Explorer SUV.

As with the new Ford Explorer, it’s built on Volkswagen’s MEB architecture under the carmakers’ global cooperation, which is also used for the Volkswagen ID.5 and Škoda Enyaq Coupe.

Design likenesses with the hallowed Capri, which stopped production in 1986, are not many but Ford says the styling “reimagines classic Capri design cues for the electric age”. The Capri also bears a more swooping coupe roofline than the Explorer and comes with either 19-, 20- or 21-inch machined metal alloy wheels and a standout colour palette featuring an exclusive Vivid Yellow option.

Two powertrains will be available: rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive extended-range configurations, as already seen in the Explorer and featuring 77kWh and 79kWh batteries respectively. Like the Explorer, a single-motor RWD variant with a standard-range 52kWh NMC battery will arrive at a later date as a cheaper, entry-level model.

The RWD models deliver 286hp and hit 62mph in 6.3 seconds. The dual-motor AWD powertrain will have up to 340hp available, delivering 0-62mph acceleration in 5.5 seconds.

Ford is promising a maximum range of 627km / 390 miles for the extended-range RWD version and 560km / 348 miles for the AWD variant.

Fast charging will also feature; the Capri will be able to charge at up to 185kW via DC chargers, zapping it from 10 to 80% in some 26 minutes. Drivers will also get access to more than 600,000 BlueOval Charge Network charge points across Europe.

Both powertrains will be available in standard or Premium trim. Equipment includes a 14.6-inch portrait infotainment screen, featuring voice activation and connected navigation.   Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard. The interior also comes with a 17-litre ‘megaconsole’ between the front seats, which is able to house a 15-inch laptop, plus securable personal storage via the ‘My Private Locker’ and a foldable boot floor to enable up to 572 litres of boot space.

Amko Leenarts, director, design, Ford In Europe, commented: “We’re celebrating our past,
while reinventing our future. The new all-electric Capri is a car that only Ford could build.”

Prices for the extended-range versions start from £48,075, ahead of the arrival of the cheaper standard-range version. First models are due to be with UK customers around mid-autumn this year.
