One of the stars at the upcoming Great British Fleet Event, the second-edition supermini becomes the first of the current generation of MG cars to get full hybrid technology, while also delivering extra space and equipment.

The Hybrid+ powertrain teams up a 102hp 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with a 136hp motor, a 1.83kWh battery and a three-speed automatic compared to the conventional CVT in hybrids.

MG says the larger battery capacity allows for an extensive electric-only driving range – significantly boosting efficiency and enabling zero-emission running for longer. It’s expected to return WLTP combined fuel consumption of 64mpg and CO2 emissions of 100g/km.

The MG3 also features a separate generator, allowing for five different hybrid modes. These include electric-only power, a series hybrid whereby the engine powers the generator, which in turns powers the electric motor, or in parallel mode where both the engine and the electric motor power the wheels.

It’s also claimed to be the fastest-accelerating hybrid B-segment hatchback, delivering real-world performance benefits, with a combined 194hp of power and 0-62mph in 8.0 seconds.

The new MG3 has also been designed for dynamic handling and refinement, while also said to deliver new highs in refinement and noise suppression.

New from the ground up, the MG3 is both longer and wider than the model it replaces, freeing up more interior space for occupants. It also offers the largest boot space in the hybrid B-segment class, according to the carmaker, with a figure of 293 litres with the seats up.

Two specifications will be available in the UK at launch: SE and Trophy.

Features include a twin-screen cockpit that comes with a 7-inch digital instrument screen as well as a 10.25-inch central infotainment system. Physical ‘piano-key’ switches have been retained on the centre console to maximise safety and convenience while driving.

Satellite navigation comes as standard, along with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Drivers can also use the iSmart app for connectivity and features “more commonly be associated with premium models”.

Other equipment highlights include air con, six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connection, four USB ports, and rear parking sensors and camera.

The Trophy grade adds leather-style upholstery, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, and 360-degree camera.

Driver safety features include MG Pilot technology, which features lane keep assist with lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and traffic jam assist.
The MG3 also comes with MG’s usual seven-year/80,000 miles warranty included as standard.

David Allison, MG Motor UK head of product and planning, said: “With all the attributes to become a leader in its class, the all-new MG3 will offer customers a combination of efficiency and performance with MG’s exciting Hybrid+ powertrain. More refined, yet also bringing MG’s fun-to-drive philosophy to the market, the MG3 is excellently equipped, both with premium interior features and MG Pilot safety systems.”
