Gridserve completes EV charger upgrade across motorway network

By / 3 years ago / UK News / No Comments

Gridserve has now upgraded all its chargers across the UK’s motorways, bringing fast, reliable and connected charging.

In the 10 months since it acquired the Electric Highway, Gridserve has replaced more than 300 existing medium power chargers at over 130 motorway service areas

The milestone achievement has been reached 10 months into its ownership of the Gridserve Electric Highway, acquired from green energy firm Ecotricity in June 2021, and despite “headwinds” caused by global supply chain issues, manufacturing and transportation delays, compounded by new contractual issues.

Gridserve pledged at the time of the acquisition that it would upgrade the network, which was founded over a decade ago, and since then it’s replaced more than 300 existing medium power chargers at over 130 motorway service areas run by Extra, Moto, Roadchef, Welcome Break and Westmorland. All of these now provide contactless card payment, 24-hour support, real-time status updates and other features.

Gridserve also continues to roll out its High Power Electric Hubs, which consist of six or more high power chargers. Three of these new sites are operational today and a further nine are currently under construction, all located on major arterial routes.

The inaugural Electric Hubs are located in Swansea, Exeter and Burton-in-Kendal and have transformed charging in these areas. The sites feature 24 chargers, delivering up to 350kW and giving up to 100 miles of range in less than 10 minutes.

Gridserve – which won the Innovation in EV Technology title at last year’s Fleet World Great British Fleet Awards and was highly commended this year – is also continuing its work to upgrade its medium-power charging locations based on an approach of “continuous improvement and innovation”. Examples include the start of the roll-out of dual charging feature from this month, enabling multiple connectors to be used at the same time, on a single charger. This doubles the number of cars that can charge at once at those locations.

It’s also deploying additional Electric Hubs and Electric Forecourts to support motorists in the run up to the 2030 ICE ban and beyond.

CEO Toddington Harper said: “We are really pleased to be able to celebrate this milestone today. We’ve had great feedback from drivers on both the network upgrades and also on our new high-power Electric Hubs, which provide the best possible charging experience, and are already enabling more drivers to travel quickly and comfortably around the UK.”

Commenting on the company’s work, Transport Minister Trudy Harrison MP said: “I welcome the leadership Gridserve has shown.”
