Hammersmith and Fulham to hit 1,000 EV charging points by Christmas
Hammersmith and Fulham is on track to almost double the number of EV charge points installed since the summer to over 1,000 by Christmas.
As part of its bid to provide the best charging experience in the UK, the London borough is installing 55 new fast charge points, expanding its network further.
The dual-socket on-street charge points will create an additional 110 electric parking bays across the borough and are being installed by Liberty Charge, the joint venture created by Liberty Global and Zouk Capital to support the roll-out of on-street EV charge points in the UK.
The borough now has more than 600 publicly available electric vehicle charge points for residents, businesses and visitors to use on its streets – over 450 of them on lamppost columns – and by December 2021 it will pass 1,000 charge points.
Councillor Stephen Cowan, leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, said: “We’re doing our best to tackle climate change and to reach the target of zero net carbon footprint by 2030. This is an important part of our hierarchy of travel solutions that are allowing us to rise to the challenge of climate change. So, not only do you see more electric car charging bays, you see electric scooters, you see cycle lanes, and you see many other measures we’re taking to make it easier for people to travel around in a way that protects our environment.”
Liberty Charge is also working with a string of other London boroughs to increase charging infrastructure. In the last few weeks Croydon has deployed 42 charge points, and has planned a further 64 charge points with the firm. Similarly, earlier this year Waltham Forest has deployed 10 charge points and plans around 50 more sites.
Neil Isaacson, CEO, Liberty Charge, concluded: “To get anywhere near our targets we need more on-street EV charging – and fast. By the latest estimate, if we continue to install EV charge points at the current rate, we’ll have a shortfall of 250,000 by 2032. The example set by Hammersmith and Fulham is one that should be applauded.”
