Hyundai is updating its Ioniq 5 fully electric crossover with a larger battery pack, along with extra equipment.

The 2023 Ioniq 5 gains a new, larger battery pack and a range of safety and handling updates

Introduced for the 2023 model year, the new 77.4kWh battery is the same as used in sister model, the Kia EV6, and larger than the current 73kWh range-topping battery. Electric range, along with pricing, has not been announced yet but the Kia has up to 316 miles.

The current 73kWh pack in the Ioniq 5 is available in both rear- and all-wheel drive versions. The all-wheel drive version has an extra motor mounted on the front axle, delivering 306hp and a 287-mile range. The two-wheel drive version has a 300-mile range.

The new larger battery will be sold alongside the entry-level 58kWh pack, which is currently married up with a 170hp motor and brings up to 240 miles of range.

Thanks to the Ioniq 5’s 800V battery architecture, it can charge at up to 220kW at a DC ultra-fast charging station – going from 10-80% in less than 18 minutes.

Equipment updates for the new model year will see the Ioniq 5 become available with video-based digital interior and exterior mirrors, bringing improved visibility.

These include a Digital Centre Mirror (DCM) system, installed below the rear spoiler and enabling a panoramic rear-facing view of the car.

Hyundai’s Digital Side Mirrors (DSM), already available for Korean-spec Ioniq 5 models, will now also debut in Europe. These reduce air resistance while providing an enhanced rear view, even in bad weather.

A new battery conditioning feature will also launch and will enable the Ioniq 5 to automatically adapt its battery temperature while travelling. This will ensure optimal charging conditions when reaching the charging point, improving real-life charging performance in hot or cold conditions. It’s activated automatically when a charging point is programmed into the sat nav using connected routing.

Also new are Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD), designed to improve the response of the rear axle suspension to increase ride comfort as well as improving both body control and handling.

The 2023 model year Ioniq 5 will be available to order from late spring. UK prices and final specification will be confirmed closer to its arrival.
