Lexus RZ treated to far-reaching tech overhaul
Lexus has given its RZ all-electric SUV an extensive tech update under its new EV offensive.
One of three new battery electric cars (BEVs) that the premium brand will debut in the next 12 months, the heavily revised RZ gains a new, extended line-up with more power, range and faster charging plus some big tech debuts.
First launched in 2023, the Lexus flagship now get the first application of the brand’s steer-by-wire system.
Such technology replaces the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack with an electrical connection – and Lexus says it gives a “new driving experience with smooth, easy and more intuitive operation, particularly when enjoying winding roads”. It also delivers responsiveness and driver feedback “free from unwelcome vibrations”.
The arrival of steer-by-wire is accompanied by a new ‘yoke’ steering wheel, which the brand says frees up more space around the knees and legs for easier entry and exit to the car.
Powertrain updates bring a new, larger 77kWh battery and more power. Powertrain options include the 224hp RZ 350, the 380hp RZ 500e and the 408hp RZ 550e F Sport. The latter marks the first time the RZ has received an F Sport version and is kitted out with all-wheel drive, an F Sport-dedicated interior and exterior, plus a newly developed Interactive Manual Drive system programmed with an eight-speed virtual gear set-up.
Range for the RZ has been extended by up to 60 miles (100km) thanks to the completely revised battery electric system. And battery charging time will be quicker, aided by the adoption of a new battery pre-conditioning system and 22kW AC onboard charger.
