It’s a little over a year since I’ve had an electric vehicle at my disposal for longer than the usual week-long press demonstrators.

I’ve spent my first month with the LEAF remembering why I got on so well with the technology last time. Our extended winter has highlighted one of them. Cold mornings – and trips at any other time of the day – are much easier when you can sign into the NissanConnect app and set the cabin heater to come on for a few minutes before going out.

It’s proved to be an easy family car, too. The unusually-shaped back end is home to a surprisingly large boot, big enough for a buggy to fit into, and for the majority of weekend mileage we’re having absolutely no range anxiety. Actually, the biggest frustration is drivers of petrol and diesel cars blocking charging points at our local supermarket.

Plus we’ve been able to do this without worrying about running a cold engine. The first ten minutes or so of any journey are the ones where it’s least efficient and most likely to block exhaust filters. Neither are problems LEAF drivers will have to face. Who said it’s hard to switch?
