Lotus Elise reborn as electric sportscar able to charge in six minutes

A new electric sports car concept featuring claimed breakthrough battery technology has debuted in the UK.

The Nyobolt EV is able to charge fully and repeatedly in less than six minutes using existing charging technology

Providing a future vision for electric vehicles, the Nyobolt EV is able to charge fully and repeatedly in less than six minutes using existing charging technology – a new record in automotive electrification, according to Nyobolt, the developer of the ultra-fast-charging battery technology.

It’s a collaboration between Cambridge-based Nyobolt, design and engineering business Callum, and Julian Thomson, most famously the designer of the Lotus Elise and the reason why the concept may look familiar to many.

Providing a vision for the future of EVs, the Nyobolt EV uses cutting-edge battery technology, smaller and lighter than existing solutions and able to tackle the core problems at the heart of the EV industry.

The result is an EV that’s much faster to charge and with a range of up to 250km (155 miles) from its 35kWh battery, giving rise to a nimbler, more efficient EV said to deliver a lower upfront cost, lower running costs and lower use of scarce raw material.

Nyobolt says its breakthrough technology doesn’t sacrifice battery life; it’s tested its batteries for over 2,000 fast charge cycles without significant performance loss.

Although it’s still a concept, a dynamic version of the Nyobolt EV will be revealed by the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, Nyobolt’s ready-to-deploy technology will go into production in early 2024, ready for rapid scale-up. And the technology could also be used for larger packs, enabling luxury EVs, trucks or buses that could be charged in a few minutes, once 1MW chargers become available.

Sai Shivareddy, CEO at Nyobolt, said: “Unlocking the challenges faced by electric vehicle designers has been key to the development of our breakthrough fast-charging batteries. Previously, enabling a lightweight fast-charging vehicle was not possible without compromising its lifetime and so people have been relying on costly and large battery packs in the vehicle. With our unique technology we have achieved a six-minute charge car, and developed smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time.

“Our partnership with Callum shows how adoption of system-level technology innovations can transform the future of electric vehicles and increase accessibility of EVs, including to the 40% of UK households who can’t charge their vehicle at home overnight.”
