Mazda is expanding its SUV line-up with two new plug-in hybrid models and a range-extender version of the MX-30 electric car from 2022.

Mazda is introducing a range-extended version of the MX-30 in Europe from the first half of 2022 while PHEV CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs will arrive in the next two years

The new CX-60 and CX-80 will launch in Europe over the next two years, bringing two-row and three-row formats respectively and forming part of the brand’s large product group.

The new models will sit above the existing SUV line-up, including the CX-5 and CX-30, and will spearhead the European introduction of plug-in hybrid models with straight-four petrol engines combined with an electric motor.

The line-ups will also include Mazda’s new-generation straight-six Skyactiv-X petrol engine and Skyactiv-D diesel engine combined with a 48V mild hybrid system and said to provide “high output with excellent environmental performance”.

Mazda has also confirmed at last it will be introducing a range-extender version of the MX-30 electric SUV using a rotary engine – this will launch in the first half of 2022. The model, which is based on the CX-30, had been designed from the outset for a small rotary engine to be fitted under the bonnet, but plans had been on hold.

Outside of Europe, Mazda is expanding its line-up with new CX-70 and CX-90 SUVs and a CX-50 model from its small platform group,  which will launch in the US and a number of other markets.

Longer-term plans will see the carmaker introduce a number of new products on a new EV-dedicated platform from 2025 – supporting plans to complete the electrification of its complete range by 2030.
