Mercedes-Benz CLA debuts with near 500-mile electric version

Mercedes has pulled the wraps off its new CLA saloon, setting new standards in technology while also delivering the UK’s longest-range electric car to date.

The new CLA is the first model in a completely new family of vehicles, each of which will be available with both electric and hybrid drives

On sale later this year, the new CLA is the first model in a completely new family of vehicles, each of which will be available with both electric and hybrid drives.

For now, the focus is on the electric version, which not only marks a first for the CLA line-up but, with a mighty 492-mile (792km) official WLTP range, will also set a new benchmark.

Two versions will be available – the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC – both with an 85kWh (useable) lithium-ion battery.

The CLA250+ single-motor variant will deliver the headline range figure along with 272hp of power.

The all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4Matic with EQ Technology gets an additional motor on the front axle, increasing power to 354hp, while still being good for an official range of 478 miles (770km).

The CLA also features an 800V electric architecture that “makes charging almost as fast as refuelling”. Both versions can charge at up to 320kW, giving a recharge to 200 miles (325km) in around 10 minutes for the CLA 250+. The electric CLA is also the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to feature an air-to-air heat pump, which uses a so-called multi-source model to contribute to the high efficiency of the CLA.

Hybrid versions, along with a CLA Shooting Brake estate, will arrive later. Details are sparse for now but the hybrid line-up will include a 48V mild hybrid version.

The new CLA is also the most intelligent Mercedes-Benz to date thanks to the inhouse developed Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The new AI-enhanced system is connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud and enables regular over-the-air updates for the most important vehicle functions, including driving assistance systems for the first time.

The cabin features a minimalist interior design focusing on three high-tech elements. These include the optional, floating MBUX Superscreen, which extends across the entire width of the interior and incorporates a 10.25-inch driver display and the 14-inch centre display, while a 14-inch display for the front passenger is a further option.

The interior also comes with a ‘floating’ centre console, split into two levels, and large leather-clad door centre panels.

All CLA models come as standard with an expansive panoramic roof and LED High Performance headlights.

The new CLA will go on sale in October. Prices will be announced closer to the launch.
