Revealed at the Munich Motor Show, it’s the second of three electric saloons due from the brand and will sit under the luxury EQS saloon revealed earlier this year. As with the EQS, it will be based on the EVA2 premium-class electric architecture, and will bring a range of up to 660km (410 miles) from its 90kWh battery.

Two versions will be launched initially and will include the EQE 350, which will have 292hp. Details of the other drivetrain have not been announced.

More compact than the EQS but larger than the E-Class, the EQE is comparable to the CLS four-door coupé in size and uses the same hatch-style boot lid set-up. Boot capacity stands at 430 litres.

Interior design and equipment are modelled on the EQS, and include the MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment device – which spans almost the full width of the car and houses three screens under a glass cover –  along with automatic comfort doors (front) and rear-axle steering as optional extras.

And as with the EQS, the EQE offers the possibility to activate completely new vehicle functions via over-the-air updates in many area, such as the ‘Roaring Pulse’ sound feature and special driving modes for young drivers and service personnel.

Drivers will also be able to use Navigation with Electric Intelligence to plan the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors – including dynamic responses to traffic jams.

Drivers will also be able to access the Mercedes Me Charge EV charging service, which enables customers to charge at over 530,000 public charging stations around the world, more than 200,000 of them in Europe.

Latest-generation driving assistance systems include a new microsleep warning from Attention Assist, which analyses the driver’s eyelid movements using a camera in the driver display and warns accordingly.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE will start a phased global launch from mid-2022. It will be produced in Beijing for the Chinese market and in Bremen, Germany, for the rest of the world. Prices will be announced closer to launch.
