Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX breaks own electric record with 747-mile drive

Mercedes has set a new efficiency record for its Vision EQXX research car after travelling 747 miles without recharging.

The Vision EQXX resarch car completed a 747-mile road trip from Stuttgart to the UK and went on to manage 11 laps of the Silverstone track

The trip was made on a real-world mix of roads from Stuttgart in Germany to Silverstone in the UK and breaks the 620-mile record for the electric saloon set in April this year.

The car – the most efficient Mercedes ever built – was then taken for 11 laps of the Silverstone track by Nyck de Vries, a Dutch racing driver for the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team, using the last of the charge on the pit lane.

Across the whole road trip, the vehicle achieve an average consumption of 8.3kWh/100km during tough conditions including scorching summer temperatures and heavy traffic around Stuttgart and in South East England. Its test also showed the air con had a minimal negative impact on overall energy consumption, despite being in use for just over eight hours of the total 14 hours and 30 minutes of driving time.

The brand said the journey proved the effectiveness of its electric efficiency technologies in a wide range of real-life traffic scenarios, while also giving its R&D experts valuable data for the ongoing development programme.

“As Mercedes-Benz strives to go all-electric by 2030 wherever market conditions allow, it is important to show to the world what can be achieved in real terms through a combination of cutting-edge technology, teamwork and determination,” said Markus Schäfer, chief technology officer at Mercedes-Benz AG.

The vehicle is now making a weekend trip to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it joins other brand icons of the past, present and future, including the Mercedes-AMG ONE and Vision AMG, and will take a run up the famous hill climb.

Mercedes has hinted that further iconic road trips of the Vision EQXX will follow soon as it continues to work on the development of many technologies in the vehicle for application in future series-production vehicles. It’s expected to provide the basis for cars arriving from 2024 onwards.
