MG Motor has revealed the first official UK images of its all-new MG4 EV, ahead of its arrival in September.

The MG4 electric hatch is due for a UK launch in September

The new model was confirmed last week to arrive in Europe by year-end but it’s the first time that images of the UK version have been revealed rather than the Chinese-specification Mulan or the model for continental Europe.

It’s the carmaker’s answer to the Cupra Born and Volkswagen ID.3 and the first in a series of MG models using its new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) architecture, said to deliver outstanding safety, efficiency and driver engagement.

The MSP has been designed for a wide range of vehicles spanning different vehicle segments, from hatchbacks to SUVs and sports cars – it’s suitable for wheelbases ranging from 2,650 to 3,100mm. On the MG4, it will use rear-wheel drive, which allows 50:50 weight distribution and an “enhanced driving experience”. The compact size of the integrated battery structure, which has a height of just 110mm, also enhances dynamics.

Battery capacities will initially range from 51kWh to 64kWh, giving a range of between 218 and 281 miles range on the WLTP cycle. The architecture has been designed for future-proofed opportunities, including battery swap systems, while the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) will enable vehicles to receive over-the-air updates throughout their lifecycle.

David Allison, head of product & planning at MG Motor UK, said: “The MG4 EV is a key part of the next phase of growth for MG. Our new MSP architecture will enable us to offer multiple options for the rapidly expanding UK electric car market, with all choices reinforcing our reputation for outstanding design, market-leading technology and excellent value for money.”

Most recent registrations data for MG shows the brand’s existing range of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles continue to gather speed in the UK market; the brand grew by 83% in the first five months of 2022, despite an overall 8.7% market contraction during the same period.

Further details on the new MG4 EV will be released soon, including pricing and full specifications.
