MG has confirmed details for its S5 EV, which lands in April as a new challenger to the Kia EV3 and Škoda Elroq.

Already on sale in China as the ES5, the B-SUV succeeds the ZS EV and is designed as a spacious, versatile and sleek model with dynamic, engaging and efficient EV performance.

Based on the modular scalable platform (MSP) designed purely for EVs and also used for the MG4, it will combine the “critically acclaimed attributes” of its hatchback sibling while “advancing the driving experience further with a host of new technology as well as a spacious, premium cabin ambience”.

The line-up comprises three models, starting with the SE Standard Range for £28,495, then the SE Long Range at £30,995 and the Trophy Long Range range-topper at £33,495.

There’s two battery options: a 49kWh pack for the SE Standard Range with a 221-mile WLTP range and a 64kWh pack for the SE Long Range and the Trophy Long Range with combined driving ranges of 298 miles and 288 miles respectively.

Maximum DC charging is 120kW for the 49kWh battery and 139kW for the Long Range 64kWh pack, enabling DC charging times from 24 minutes and 28 minutes respectively.

It’s powered by a 231hp rear-mounted motor, delivering maximum torque of 350Nm and able to hit 62mph from a standing start in 6.3 seconds. Drivers can choose from five modes – Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow and Custom – or drive their way.

It’s designed for generous space for four adult occupants and boot space that’s among the best in class, delivering 453 litres for luggage and 1,441 litres with the 60:40 split-fold rear seats down. The MGS5 EV also comes with a two-stage boot floor and a boot hook, mesh pockets and anchor points. A smart, electric tailgate is also provided.

Technology includes a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and 12.8-inch HD touchscreen for infotainment with wireless connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with a range of built-in apps such as You Tube, Spotify and TikTok. The MGS5 EV also features physical buttons to control main functions such as audio, HVAC, hazard warning lights and demisting.

All models come with iSmart app connectivity as standard, which can be used to lock and unlock the MGS5 EV, find the parking location, pre-start the climate control, create travel plans and check key information such as available driving range, battery charge status and tyre pressures.

The interior comes with soft touch plastics and MG’s six-sided steering wheel design – debuted on the MG4. The SE and Trophy feature a six-way adjustable driver’s seat and a four-way adjustable passenger’s seat, while the Trophy flagship gets heated front seats and steering wheel as well as rear privacy glass.

The MG Pilot suite of advanced driver assistance systems includes collision avoidance, lane safety, cruise control features and driving assistance features including active emergency braking and blind spot detection. The MGS5 EV also debuts an MG Pilot Custom option, enabling the driver to customise and then store their preferred features.

MG has also partnered with Continental for a bespoke EV braking system that gives a braking distance of 35.5m from 62mph.

Design is conceived for a sharp, contemporary look that takes inspiration from the Cyberster GT convertible, including a split grille design, and also comes with LED Daytime Running Lamps featuring a chequered flag signature that’s repeated at the rear. The MGS5 EV also gets 17-inch alloys (18-inch for the Trophy) side cladding, twin roof rails, plus a light bar and spoiler at the rear.

The MGS5 EV is supported by a seven-year/80,000-mile MG warranty.
