Mitie morphs into EV fleet giant with 50% milestone
Mitie has now transitioned 50% of its fleet to electric vehicles, marking a major milestone in its decarbonisation journey.
The facilities management giant has more than 3,500 electric-powered vehicles in operation, making it one of the largest electric fleets in the UK.
The latest EV rollout, which took Mitie passed the 50% mark, was a fleet of Vauxhall Vivaro-Es, which will be driven by its Technical Services mobile engineers.
The company is now on track to meet its target of fully electrifying the fleet by the end of 2025, earlier than its previous plans and supporting its wider Plan Zero pledge.
Mitie first started the switch to EVs in 2018 and has worked swiftly since; it celebrated its 3,000th EV in December 2022. Recent additions include the arrival in May of 60 EVs across some of its major contracts including Magnox, where EVs are used by engineers conducting essential maintenance services to critical nuclear infrastructure.
Its electric fleet spans a wide range of different vehicles, used across the UK on different operations, from engineering and maintenance to security and landscaping.
As well as enabling Mitie’s own net zero ambitions, EVs are also an integral part of almost all carbon reduction opportunities presented by Mitie to its customers as part of its Decarbonisation Delivered initiative. Examples include 20 EVs recently deployed at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s Gibraltar site to support the DIO’s emissions reductions.
Other initiatives include the rollout of over 100 EV vans across major contracts including the Home Office and National Grid.
Mitie is also enabling the rapid growth of its EV fleet by installing charging stations across customer sites and colleagues’ homes; some 2,800 have already gone live.
Heidi Thompson, group fleet manager, Mitie, said: “Reaching the halfway stage in our roadmap to achieve a zero-emission fleet is an important milestone which underscores our commitment to our Plan Zero pledge, and our goal of fully electrifying our vehicles by the end of 2025. With more than 3,500 electric-powered vehicles now in operation, we’re proud to boast one of the largest electric fleets in the UK. Mitie continues to lead the way in fleet electrification and is proud to be at the forefront of sustainable practices within our industry as well as supporting other organisations to achieve their own net zero targets.”
Mitie is also helping other fleets go electric, sharing its electric vehicle expertise through its Plan Zero Fleet Transition Service. It’s working with public and private sector organisations to help them prepare for the switch to EV and maximise the financial benefits of the fleet transition.
