The UK is set to see its busiest EV charging period this weekend as drivers take to the roads to see their loved ones over the festive break, according to Moto Hospitality.

The motorway services operator, which reached a significant charging milestone this year, has teamed up with Zapmap to share a top 10 list of the most popular service stations for EV charging, so drivers can plan their festive routes accordingly.

Zapmap’s list of the UK’s most used service stations for charging saw Moto achieve an impressive seven sites in the top 10 of most used chargers, and its Exeter Junction site coming out on top.

  1. Moto Exeter Junction
  2. Moto Wetherby Junction
  3. Moto Rugby
  4. Moto Chieveley Junction
  5. Moto Cherwell Valley Junction
  6. Moto Pease Pottage Junction
  7. Extra Cobham Junction
  8. Moto Thurrock Junction
  9. Roadchef Sandbach Southbound
  10. Roadchef Watford Gap Southbound

This year has also seen Moto reach the milestone of two million electric vehicle charging events during 2024 at its sites across the UK, powering 135 million EV miles for drivers, with many more to come as the UK enters the busy Christmas travel period.

Moto says it’s also become the first motorway service area operator to reach the landmark of installing 1,000 charging bays at its locations throughout the country, with the milestone charger installed at its flagship Rugby services. Moto is aiming to open a further 200 to 300 charging bays by the end of 2025.

Moto now has an average of 14 ultra-rapid chargers per site and over three-quarters (80%) of its portfolio has a minimum of six ultra-rapid open access bays.

Moto now has ultra-rapid charging bays at 46 of its 56 sites, up from 35 at the beginning of this year, providing a multitude of options for EV drivers at locations throughout the UK’s motorway network, including key arteries such as the M4, the A1(M), the M6, the M5 and the M3.

Moto chief executive Ken McMeikan said: “The work doesn’t stop here, and we look forward to leading the way when it comes to decarbonising the UK’s strategic road network through the rapid expansion of high-powered EV charging bays at our sites.”

The news of Moto’s latest milestone also comes as the latest data from Zapmap shows that there are now more than 70,000 public charging devices in the UK; up 37% year on year.
