New Audi A3 PHEV delivers 88-mile electric range and 5% BiK

Audi is launching a new A3 Sportback plug-in hybrid, delivering a huge 88 miles of all-electric range and qualifying for 5% Benefit-in-Kind.

The new A3 plug-in hybrid more than doubles the electric range of the previous model

On sale from November priced from £39,150, the new plug-in hybrid version more than doubles the electric range of the previous model, thanks to a new higher-capacity 25.7kWh battery, while also now delivering 50kW DC charging capability and more power.

The new A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e joins the majorly revamped A3 line-up launched earlier this year, gaining from the same sportier styling, new design elements and digital offerings.

As with the other models in the line-up, the latest plug-in hybrid model has been given a comprehensive technology upgrade, including a new turbocharged petrol engine and a new electric motor with increased power density, as well as the more powerful high-voltage battery.

The 150hp 1.5 TFSI evo2 combustion engine replaces the previous 1.4 TFSI and boasts a wide range of high-tech features that increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The new motor now delivers 115hp and is integrated in the six-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Peak power is 204hp with 350Nm, generating 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and with a top speed of 140mph. The all-electric top speed is 87mph and the A3 PHEV gets a specifically tuned chassis while progressive steering with a variable ratio depending on the steering angle is available as an option.

The new plug-in hybrid A3 coasts with the engines switched off and recuperate energy when braking. As with Audi’s all-electric models, the steering wheel paddles are now used to control the degree of recuperation in EV mode for the first time.

The arrival of DC charging at fast-charging stations marks a first for an Audi plug-in hybrid model. The 50kW DC recharging capability enables a recharge from 10-80% in less than half an hour. Drivers can also charge at AC charging points with three-phase charging at up to 11kW, taking 2.5 hours.

As with the rest of the A3 line-up, the plug-in hybrid powertrain is offered in Sport, S line, and Black Edition specifications. As standard, it comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, the Audi Drive Select dynamic handling system and air conditioning as standard.
