Citroën is expanding its UK line-up with a new ë-C4 X fastback crossover that will deliver over 200 miles of electric range.

Intended to provide an alternative to many mainstream mid-sized hatchback and SUV models, the ë-C4 X mixes the silhouette of a fastback with the high-riding stance of an SUV and the spaciousness of a saloon.

Vincent Cobée, Citroën global CEO, said: “Many customers have told us they want an affordable, responsible and elegant alternative to the mass of hatchback and SUV offerings in the volume compact car segment, and this is our best interpretation of that need – a forward-looking, distinctive cross design that delivers all the comfort, technology, safety and value you expect from Citroën, but also outstanding roominess and limousine versatility, with the benefit of zero-emission, all-electric power.”

The ë-C4 X will sit within the Citroën line-up between the C4 SUV-cum-hatch and the flagship C5 X, and brings a rival to models such as the new Peugeot 408 and Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. It’s built on the same Stellantis CMP platform as the C4 and its wheelbase is the same at 2,670mm but overall length is up by 240mm, giving a longer stance and extra boot space of 510 litres. A ‘ski hatch’ in the fold-down armrest enables loading of longer objects and the model is said to bring best-in-class rear knee room.

It will be sold globally within a wider C4 X line-up that encompasses petrol and diesel variants – but the UK will only get the ë-C4 X fully electric version. This connects a 136hp motor driving the front wheels with a 50kWh battery. The result is an official 224-mile WLTP range along with a 0-62mph time from 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 93mph. Drivers can also choose from three driving modes: Eco, Normal or Sport.

The battery can be charged from a 100kW rapid public charger, giving a 0-80% charge in 30 minutes. A charge from a 7.4kW wallbox takes 7.5 hours or from five hours with a three-phase electricity supply and the optional 11kW onboard charger.

In other markets, a range of three-cylinder, turbo-charged direct injection petrol models will be available, including the PureTech 100 with six-speed manual and the PureTech 130 with eight-speed automatic, while selected markets will offer the BlueHDi 130 turbo-diesel engine with the auto transmission.

Onboard equipment includes the next-generation MyCitroën Drive Plus infotainment system first seen on the C5 X and with a 10-inch HD screen, full personalisation options and storage of up to eight profiles. The natural voice recognition system, activated by a “Hello Citroën” command, can understand 20 languages, provide visual feedback and respond to commands relating to vehicle systems. The system also features over-the-air map updates via TomTom, provided free of charge for three years.

The ë-C4 X also features the brand’s Advanced Comfort Seats, which feature an extra 15mm layer of special memory foam to ensure optimal comfort, while Citroën’s Advanced Comfort Suspension adds to the calming experience.

Up to 20 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are available and include Highway Driver Assist, providing level 2 semi-autonomous driving aid, plus a blind spot monitoring system and intelligent beam headlights.

The ë-C4 X and C4 X models will be built exclusively in Europe at the Stellantis Villaverde manufacturing facility in Madrid, Spain. Sales start from autumn 2022 while the ë-C4 X arrives in the UK in early 2023.
