New EV charging stations open in Swansea
The city of Swansea has gained further EV charging points thanks to network expansion by charging software provider Clenergy EV in partnership with the local council.
It’s installed 48 new charge points and bays at 13 council-owned car parks in recent months, all of which are now connected to the mains and provide further charging options for city residents and visitors.
The area is already well covered for charge points on the Clenergy EV network. The firm started working with City of Swansea Council in July 2020 and now runs 80 EV charge points and bays in 25 council car parks around Swansea for the authority. This includes 10 at the new Bae Copr Bay De/South car park located underneath Swansea Arena.
Tourist destinations within the Gower peninsula are also catered for with areas such as Langland Bay, Cresswell Bay, Mumbles and Port Eynon receiving their first publicly available chargers. All charge points will be powered by 100% zero-emission electricity.
The new charge points further support drivers making the switch to EVs while also enabling one of the key tenets in the council’s net-zero transition.
Andrea Lewis, deputy leader and cabinet member for service transformation, said: “The newly installed charge points have been chosen following discussions with ward members and other groups and organisations. They are specifically located for convenience for day-trippers and people shopping in local communities.
“The utility company have now connected all the charge points to the mains and they will give many years’ service to our communities.”
She added: “Swansea Council has a commitment to be a net zero carbon council by 2030 and for the city as a whole to achieve that target by 2050.
“The new crop of EV charge points is the latest step in the right direction and it’s our plan to increase their numbers over the coming years. This is just the start.”
Will David, CEO at Clenergy EV, added: “We are delighted to continue to support the City of Swansea Council’s charge point rollout. The first set of charge points have already provided 270,000 zero-emission miles to EV drivers in the area.
“That number will only increase as more and more Swansea residents start switching to cleaner modes of transport.”
The public charge points are available on the Clenergy EV charge point network – which has a total of 200 chargers across Wales – and can be accessed either through the Clenergy app or web browser, in both Welsh and English.
