Volkswagen has revealed the first details of its third-generation Tiguan as the midsize SUV enters final testing.

The world premiere of the third-gen Tiguan will take place in the autumn; market launch is scheduled for 2024

First launched in autumn 2007, the Tiguan has sold more than 7.4 million models over two generations and has been VW’s best-selling model worldwide for some years.

Due for launch in 2024, the latest version will be based on the new generation of the MQB evo modular transverse matrix, enabling different powertrain types and new technologies.

Technical development head Kai Grünitz said: “State-of-the-art technology components interact perfectly in the MQB evo: a new generation of plug-in hybrid drives with electric ranges of up to 100km, probably the best active chassis control in its segment, premium interior quality and an equally new and intuitive infotainment system deliver what drivers expect from Volkswagen.”

The line-up will include turbo petrol and diesels, mild hybrid turbocharged petrol engines and eHybrid plug-in hybrid versions. The latter will get a longer electric-only range of up to 100km (62 miles), depending on equipment. In addition, AC charging will be faster in all eHybrid versions, and DC charging will also be available as standard for the first time. The Tiguan will also come solely with an automated shift gearbox (DSG), operated by a steering column switch as with the Volkswagen ID. models and with paddle shifters too.

The new model will also debut premium features such as HD matrix headlights – already seen in the Touareg and making the Tiguan one of the first in its class to get the technology – and new adaptive chassis control.

A newly developed cockpit and infotainment system also premiere, the latter with a screen up to 15 inches, while a logical operating concept has been developed in response to customer feedback.

High-quality materials, newly developed seats and better noise insulation increase comfort, and a new optional “acoustic package” will be available. The centre consoles also offer more space for storage.

Height, width and wheelbase remain almost identical to the predecessor. Length is up by some 3cm, but boot space – measured up to the height of the rear seat backrests – increases by 33 litres to 648 litres.

The world premiere of the new Tiguan will take place in the autumn.
