New Uber Green service allows drivers to book EV rides in London
Uber riders in London now have the option of choosing to travel in a fully electric vehicle under the new Uber Green service.
Launching ahead of Uber’s plans to go fully electric in London by 2025 and across the UK by 2030, the service charges riders the same fee as for a conventionally fuelled vehicle, while paying drivers more per trip to encourage the switch to electric vehicles.
Currently available for journeys starting from Zone 1, the new Uber Green service is the latest eco-focused initiative from Uber and follows the 2019 launch of its Clean Air Plan, which adds a 15p per mile fee per trip in London to support drivers with the cost of switching to an electric vehicle. It’s raised more than £125m so far and means that drivers can on average save £4,500 off the cost of an electric vehicle.
Other Uber initiatives to support its drivers include discounts on EVs from carmakers including Nissan and Kia and when using BP Pulse’s public charging network. Uber is also providing funding of more than £5m to invest in new electric vehicle charging infrastructure in London.
The Uber Green service will also be rolled out in 60 major European cities by the end of 2021, representing around 80% of Uber’s European business, and is set to be available in 1,400 US locations by the end of the year.
