New Volkswagen Golf eHybrid PHEVs on sale with up to 89 miles of range

Plug-in hybrid versions of the new Volkswagen Golf are about to go on sale in the UK, bringing up to 89 miles of range and a 5% Benefit-in-Kind rating.

The Style eHybrid is priced from £36,760 while the GTE eHybrid (pictured) starts from £39,750

Also being joined by the Golf GTI hot hatch versions, the eHybrids form a second wave of arrivals for the facelifted Golf alongside the Life, Match, Style and R-Line versions that are already available.

On sale from 27 June, two eHybrid PHEVs are available. The lead-in Style trim features a 204hp 1.5 TSI EVO2 engine, electric motor and a six-speed DSG, and is priced from £36,760. The GTE ups this with a 272hp version of the EVO2 engine and the same six-speed DSG, priced from £39,750.

Both feature a new, larger 19.7kWh battery compared to the previous 13kWh unit, able to offer fast DC charging of up to 40kW, and AC charging of up to 11kW (previously 3.6kW).

Official electric-only ranges stand at 89 miles for the Style eHybrid and 82 miles for the GTE – meaning both cars qualify for a 5% BiK rate.

The eHybrids get the same styling updates already seen with the latest Golf models, and the illuminated Volkswagen logo at the front.

Other Style eHybrid features include three-zone Climatronic air conditioning, lane assist, traffic jam assist and emergency assist, while the GTE adds keyless access, heated front seats, tinted rear glass, front fog lamps and cornering lights.

They’re joined by the new GTI, which offers more power than its predecessor as well as the latest technologies and styling revealed earlier this year for the new Golf.

Its 265hp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers an extra 20hp than before and is capable of sprinting from zero to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. It’s equipped with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox as standard. Gears can also be selected manually using paddles on the GTI-badged multi-function steering wheel, which now has physical buttons in response to customer feedback.

The GTI also features VW’s latest IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, which have a range of 500 metres, as well as redesigned LED taillight clusters and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin includes a revamped infotainment system that is controlled via a visually free-standing 12.9-inch touchscreen or the latest Volkswagen IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT integration. Premium sports seats feature the distinctive GTI check pattern, along with additional red decorative stitching.

Other standard features for the GTI include keyless access, heated front seats, three-zone Climatronic air conditioning, rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, traffic jam assist and emergency assist.

The Golf GTI is on sale from 20 June and is priced from £38,900.
