New Volkswagen Tiguan on sale with premium tech and longer-range PHEVs
Volkswagen’s third-generation Tiguan is now available to order in the UK, delivering a completely new look, upscaled technologies and more practical plug-in hybrid versions.
The midsize SUV is Volkswagen’s biggest-selling model globally and the new version, priced from £34,060, features design and technology developed in tandem with the range-topping Touareg luxury SUV.
Its chunky new look draws on the heavily facelifted Touareg that arrived late 2023 and comes with new IQ. LED headlights alongside a glass-covered horizontal bar with optionally integrated LED strip, instead of the traditional radiator grille. Optional IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights are available, as also seen on its bigger brother. Other new features are an optional horizontal LED strip at the rear, a more aerodynamic silhouette and wheels of up to 20 inches.
The main lure, however, is the arrival of a host of new systems – the result of a switch to Volkswagen Group’s latest MQB-evo modular platform, also being used for the soon-to-arrive ninth-generation Passat.
The new digital cockpit is based on the fourth-generation (MIB4) modular infotainment matrix and includes a 12.9-inch central display, along with an array of digital services and apps on board, plus a new and more intuitive system menu and operating concept. A larger 15-inch screen is also available as an option.
The interior also gains a new multi-function driving experience switch with integrated OLED display. This new rotary control, with its own mini screen, can be used to control the driving profile, radio volume and the cabin’s background lighting colours.
New eHybrid plug-in hybrid models also debut. Available from the spring with 204hp and 272hp power outputs, these deliver electric-only ranges of 62 miles, up by some 30 miles. AC charging will be faster while fast DC charging will also be available as standard for the first time.
The line-up also gains two mild hybrid petrols in a range-first – available with 130 and 150hp and also featuring Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus). These are available to order now, along with a 150hp turbocharged 2.0 TDI diesel engine. Two turbocharged 2.0 TSI petrol engines – with 204 and 265hp – join the range towards the end of 2024.
An automatic direct-shift gearbox (DSG) comes as standard on all models, and 4Motion all-wheel drive will be available as standard on the 204 and 265hp petrol engines when they arrive.
Thanks to the latest MQB-evo platform, the Tiguan also gains a new generation of adaptive chassis control. Dubbed DCC Pro, it’s optional on petrol, eHybrid and mild hybrid models, and unavailable for the diesel. It works with the Vehicle Dynamics Manager – available for the first time on the Tiguan – to control the electronic differential locks (XDS) and shock absorbers. It’s designed to deliver more neutral, stable and agile handling characteristics. Driver safety is improved thanks to increased rear axle stability, and an electromechanical power steering set-up.
The new Tiguan is available in four trims: Tiguan, Life, Elegance and R-Line. Equipment includes new ergoActive seats with pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and a 10-chamber pressure massage function on Elegance and R-Line.
