Nissan Americas and City Ventures pre-wire 200 new homes for EV charging

Around 190 Southern California homes that are currently under construction will be pre-wired, making the project among the largest residential efforts in the United States.

Each home will include a pre-wired parking space or garage which will allow easy installation of a 240v electric vehicle charging dock. This type of electric vehicle dock is the recommended system for charging a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle at home.

The pre-wiring will allow the easy installation of home-charging equipment in single- or multi-family garage locations at City Ventures’ developments in Signal Hill with 54 homes and 108 parking spaces, and at Santa Barbara with 48 homes and 100 parking spaces.

Home developments in Alhambra will also include public use garages for 88 homes and 423 parking spaces as part of the venue's retail layout.

‘By pre-wiring multi-family units, homeowners now have a simple, low-cost option to charge their all-electric Nissan LEAF at our all-electric home, and can even use the home's solar panels to power their car,’ said Herb Gardner, City Ventures' president of homebuilding.

Nissan will cooperate with City Ventures on the exchange of technical and charging information, taking note of consumer charging habits.

Experts say pre-wiring a new home for electric vehicle charging can add only up to $250 in costs during construction of the house, as opposed to spending about $10,000 when retrofitting an old home for an electric vehicle charger.
