Nissan expands Qashqai line-up with e-Power hybrid
Nissan is introducing its e-Power full hybrid to the Qashqai range in late summer, offering a more responsive, quieter and efficient powertrain option.
Making its European debut in the Nissan line-up, the e-Power powertrain launches in the Qashqai alongside the existing 1.3-litre mild hybrid petrol variants.
It uses a range-extender set-up whereby the 190hp electric motor is the sole source of power to the wheels; the 156hp 1.5-litre petrol engine is only used to generate electricity, which is either transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor or both, according to the driving scenario.
The result is an instant and linear response, according to Nissan, which says it provides “an appealing alternative to traditional hybrids where drivers have to accept the inherent shortcomings to the driving experience”.
It also targets those who don’t want to be bothered with charging and are looking for a stepping stone to a fully electric car, while benefiting from claimed superior fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared with a traditional internal combustion motor. Initial data gives a WLTP combined mpg figure of 53.5mpg and 119g/km CO2 emissions.
Guillaume Cartier, chairperson for Nissan’s AMIEO region, explained: “The introduction of the innovative e-Power system to the new Qashqai brings more of Nissan’s pioneering spirit to the crossover segment. Customers will love the feeling of driving an EV but without consideration for charging. And e-Power represents a significant milestone in Nissan’s electrification strategy.”
The e-Power powertrain was first introduced in Japan in 2017 on the Note compact family car and has been upgraded for the Qashqai to meet the demands of European consumers and their typically urban or suburban daily driving habits.
Instead of the 80hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol in the Note, the Qashqai’s e-Power system uses a 156hp 1.5-litre turbocharged variable compression petrol engine. As a result, total output stands at 188hp for the Qashqai, compared to 127hp for the Note in Japan.
Similar to the Leaf, the new Qashqai e-Power offers the ‘one-pedal’ driving experience, which – when activated – allows drivers to accelerate and brake using just the accelerator pedal.
Pricing for the new Qashqai e-Power will be announced closer to its launch this summer.
