Nissan reinvents the business MPV with third EV concept for Tokyo
Nissan has revealed its vision for the business MPV of the future with its third concept for the upcoming Japan Mobility Show.
Unveiled online overnight, the Hyper Tourer is an electric MPV that teams up fully autonomous driving tech and V2X functionality with a lounge-style interior and even Artificial Intelligence to sense the mood of occupants and tailor the ambience accordingly.
Making its physical debut at the 2023 Tokyo motor show, rebadged now as the Japan Mobility Show, it could provide the basis for a future people carrier for the brand.
While its previous two concepts have shown Nissan’s future-gazing ideas for an urban crossover and a rugged sports SUV for outdoor enthusiasts, the Hyper Tourer concept is “geared toward individuals who appreciate the finer things in life and enjoy the company of friends and associates, whether on a road trip or business outing”.
According to Nissan, the Hyper Tourer concept “focuses on nurturing and reinforcing the bond between people as they journey together”.
Its slab-sided design using smooth body panels and sharp character lines is intended to demonstrate traditional Japanese beauty while creating a premium feel. Japanese Kumiko patterns are also used on the wheels and for the interior, along with koushi patterns. The cabin also gets a flat LED panel in the floor that displays imagery of a riverbed and the sky, extending the focus on nature and harmony.
Fully autonomous capability means the driver is able to chat with passengers – using the fully swivelling front seats. And rear-seat occupants can operate the navigation and audio on the front-seat centre display using a wearable display.
The concept also uses AI technology to monitor biometric signs – including brain waves, heart rate, breathing and perspiration – to sense if anyone is stressed and automatically select complementary music and adjust the lighting for a calming effect.
Onboard space is also enhanced by the Nissan EV Technology Vision, which combines compact components and high-energy density all-solid-state batteries to optimise packaging and give an ultra-low centre of gravity. Combined with Nissan’s e-4orce all-wheel control system, it’s said to bring smooth and flat acceleration and deceleration.
The Nissan Hyper Tourer also has V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) functionality, enabling its high-capacity battery to supply power to homes and even stores and offices.
The new concept debuts at Tokyo on 26 October and, unlike the previous two concepts revealed, will be at the show in physical form.
