Launching first on the Jaecoo 7 SUV ahead of other models, the new ‘Super Hybrid System’ has been developed using third-generation hybrid technology from parent company Chery Group that “redefines” plug-in hybrids.

It’s said to be unlike typical PHEV systems by ensuring the electric battery remains charged and never drops to 0%, enabling the vehicle’s claimed ultra-high thermal efficiency, ultra-long endurance mileage and ultra-low carbon emissions alongside ultra-high battery safety.

The result is a combined battery and fuel range of 745 miles, electric-only driving range of 56 miles and official emissions of 23g/km for the Jaecoo 7.

Jaecoo has also outlined details for the J7 SHS powertrain, which teams up a fifth-generation 143hp 1.5-litre TDGI petrol engine with a hybrid transmission and 18.3kW lithium iron phosphate battery. Engine technologies to help maximise fuel consumption and driving performance include Deep Miller cycle; i-HEC internal combustion; i-HTM intelligent thermal management system; HTC efficient turbocharging; i-LS intelligent lubrication and HiDS high dilution.

The hybrid transmission uses four core technologies to maximise efficiency and enable smooth performance, while the battery pack features a triple-layer design to maximise impact resistance.

The specs also reveal that the Omoda and Jaecoo SHS outputs a combined 347hp and 525Nm of torque, enough to propel the Jaecoo 7 SHS from 0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds; said to be faster than comparative hybrid powertrains, as well as equivalent pure petrol-powered vehicles.

Peter Matkin, chief engineer at Jaecoo and head of engineering for Chery Group, commented: “The rapid growth of new energy vehicles is set to continue, and plug-in hybrids are a key part of this expansion around the world. The SHS enables an improved driving experience and better fuel economy, helped by a unique engineering solution. Jaecoo engineers have worked tirelessly to fine-tune Chery [Group]’s CDM hybrid technology to offer a truly viable alternative to a pure electric vehicle.”

In the UK, the Jaecoo 7 SHS is priced from £35,065 and starts deliveries from 31 January. The line-up also includes the entry-level 1.6-litre turbo petrol model priced from £29,435.

Future Omoda and Jaecoo brands to feature the SHS drivetrain will be announced in the coming months.
