PayByPhone launches EV charging and payments feature

The PayByPhone app has debuted a brand-new EV charging and payments feature that connects drivers to over 53,000 chargers in the UK.

The new feature enables drivers to access and pay for charging at over 53,000 chargers in the UK

Powered by Plugsurfing, which is also owned by parent group Corpay and pitched as the UK’s largest consolidated EV charging network, the new feature gives access to chargers in 19,000 locations nationwide.

It’s said to cover 80% of the UK’s fast DC and HPC chargers and to provide the most extensive choice for charging and paying in one seamless experience.

The new payment functionality complements the recently launched EV charging locator feature and marks the latest development in PayByPhone’s evolution from a smart cashless parking app to a one-stop shop for vehicle management.

Drivers using the PayByPhone app can now search for local charge points, filtering by networks, connector types and minimum speeds and compare prices, view opening hours, get directions, and see real-time availability to efficiently plan journeys.

Users can also pay for their charging session within a single app, providing a safer, more secure experience designed to help reduce QR code fraud, and manage their charging session remotely by monitoring the status and duration in-app. Drivers can also view their charging history and access all receipts in-app.

Jonny Combe, CEO of PayByPhone, said: “PayByPhone’s promise has always been to simplify the journey of our motorists so that they can focus on what matters most. We are living this promise by evolving from a simple digital parking solution into a full-service app for drivers to manage all their vehicle needs. The launch of EV charging payment is the latest in a host of exciting new features we’re rolling out in our app. I’m delighted to offer EV drivers this new functionality to make their driving experience a simpler one.”

These features complement PayByPhone’s original digital parking payment functionality. The app now combines everything from parking, fuel price comparison for ICE/hybrid drivers and EV charging spots to MOT bookings into one solution, with many new vehicle management features launching soon.

PayByPhone users can also benefit from a discount on MOTs booked via the app. For the first 2,000 MOT bookings before 31 December 2024, drivers will receive £5 off their MOT.
