PHEV and HEV demand from fleets rising as BEV falls, finds Cap
Fleet uptake of plug-in hybrids and full hybrids has risen in recent months at the expense of fully electric cars, according to Cap HPI.
The latest analysis from the firm’s Insight report shows that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 41% of fleet registrations in the first half of 2024 –10% lower than over the same period last year. At the same time, PHEV’s share is nearly 10% higher.
The share of all alternative fuel vehicles (electric/BEV, plug-in hybrid/PHEV, and hybrid/HEV) remained stable at over 70% between 2024 and the same period in 2023.
Andrew Turner, senior product specialist at Cap HPI Consulting, said: “The mix for alternative vehicles has changed, with PHEV and HEV rising and BEV falling. Overall, the Insight market is fairly flat compared to the same period in 2023, and this may be driven by the slowdown in electric car (BEV) registrations, given their popularity in this sector.”
The June data from Cap also shows the Tesla Model Y topping the table, followed by the Tesla Model 3, Audi Q4, and Audi A3. BEVs accounted for six of the top ten registered vehicles.
Insight provides monthly market data on fleet registrations by leading fleet operators. The software provides valuable insights on emerging trends and helps teams use accurate and timely data to monitor the industry.
Andrew Turner concluded: “With new market entrants targeting the fleet sector for growth, it will be interesting to see how a wider range of models and price points will impact the BEV share of the market over the coming months.”
The new data from Cap comes as the SMMT also publishes new car registration figures for July. Across all channels, BEV demand rose 18.8% for the first seven months of the year to account for 18.5% of the new car market, while PHEVs were up 12.4% to an 8.9% share and HEVs rose 31.4% to take a 14.5% share YtD.
