Polestar 2 upgrades deliver more range and performance

The Polestar 2 has been given a major update, increasing its power and range while debuting rear-wheel drive.

The updates increase power and range for the Polestar 2 while debuting rear-wheel drive

First launched in 2019, the electric family hatchback has been revised for the 2024 model year, including powertrain upgrades through new electric motors and inverters, as already seen with the C40 and XC40 Recharge from parent firm Volvo.

Single-motor variants are now rear-wheel driven, while the new motor increases power to 299hp (241hp before) and torque to 490Nm (up from 330Nm). This cuts the 0-62mph sprint time to 6.2 seconds, a reduction of up to 1.2 seconds.

The dual-motor version now gets a rear-drive bias thanks to a revised drivetrain setup and torque-ratio. This boosts output to 422hp and 740Nm (from 410hp and 660Nm), improving traction, efficiency and performance – it now takes care of the 0-62mph sprint in 4.5 seconds. The new layout also means the front motor can now be disengaged completely when not needed, or re-engaged when the driver wants more power.

The model update includes upgraded batteries, enhancing efficiency and capacity as well as cutting charging times. Long-range versions now feature a larger-capacity 82kWh battery while the standard-range versions switch to a different 69kWh pack. As a result, range increases; the Long Range dual-motor variant now stands at 368 miles (592 km) WLTP, up by 65 miles (105km), while the Long range single-motor version can now achieve up to 395 miles (635 km), up by 52 miles (84km). The Standard Range single-motor version is now capable of up to 322 miles (518km), an increase of 25 miles (40km).

Despite the larger batteries, more powerful motors, longer range and increased performance, carbon emissions for versions with the new 82kWh battery have fallen by 1.1 tonnes to 5.9 tonnes per car (previously 7 tonnes per car), thanks to improved cell chemistry.

Other changes include the arrival of the arrival of a new front-end, incorporating ‘SmartZone’ tech such as a front-facing camera and mid-range radar, as already seen on the Polestar 3.

The standard equipment list has also been extended; additions include Driver Awareness features and a wireless phone charger.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said: “Typically in the car industry, a facelift introduces superficial visual changes that often destroy the original intention of the car’s design theme. With the new model year Polestar 2, we rather went below the surface and upgraded substantial tech and mechanical components of the electric drivetrain. This is the best Polestar 2 yet, and with the updated front design with the new SmartZone, the best-looking one, too.”

The 2024 model year Polestar is 2 is available to order now, priced from £44,950 for the single-motor model and £52,950 for the dual-motor long-range model. First deliveries are expected in the third quarter of 2023.
