Pricing and specifications announced for 2016 Toyota Prius

Priced from £23,295 OTR, the new model is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) modular platform, which will underpin a number of other future models and enables the Prius to offer a low centre of gravity for improved handling as well as increased space.

The 2016 Prius also brings enhancements to the hybrid powertrain as well as changes to the 97bhp 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and 71bhp electric motor. Official fuel economy and CO2 figures haven't been announced, but Toyota is claiming an 18% improvement over the outgoing car – which would put the most efficient version at around 88.3mpg and 73g/km, enough to qualify for London Congestion Charge exemption without a mains-rechargeable battery.

The new model also sees the introduction of new Business Edition and Business Edition Plus versions, which join the entry-level Active and top-spec Excel versions.

Standard kit includes LED headlights with Automatic High Beam, electric driver’s seat adjustment, Smart Entry with push-button start and the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with touch screen control and DAB radio reception. An enhanced Toyota Safety Sense package – which gains radar-governed Adaptive Cruise Control and pedestrian recognition capability in the Pre-Collision System – is also standard along with a new dual-zone air conditioning system.

Higher grade models gain more advanced features, such as a colour head-up display – marked out as a Toyota first, wireless phone charger, blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.

The 2016 Prius also marks the first European appearance of the new Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA) system – available on the Business Edition Plus trim – which provides automatic steering for parking along with an automatic braking system.

The new Prius is available to order now, with customer deliveries due to begin next March.
