Rapid charging forecourts are key incentive for EV switch, say drivers
Bespoke rapid charging forecourts could play a major role in encouraging drivers to switch to electric vehicles, new research finds.
Following the launch of Gridserve’s inaugural Electric Forecourt in Essex recently, a survey from Venson Automotive Solutions has found 68% of drivers would be more likely to make the switch to an EV if they knew they could conduct a rapid 30-minute charge at an electric forecourt rather than the inconvenience of charging their vehicle at home.
Gridserve – which won the Innovation in EV Technology title at this year’s Fleet World Great British Fleet Awards – is planning to build a network of more than 100 Electric Forecourts in the UK, all focused on low-cost, ultra-fast charging, backed by renewable energy and a convenient, driver-focused experience.
Alison Bell, marketing director at Venson Automotive Solutions, commented: “This new style of forecourt, with rapid charging points and excellent amenities on site, are a glimpse into the future of sustainable travel for both consumer and commercial drivers. Alongside convenience stores, high-tech play areas and exercise bikes for visitors to enjoy, the new latest forecourt features comfortable ‘office pods’ to allow company car drivers to stay connected, have meetings and generally avoid down time while their vehicle charges.”
The Venson survey also asked respondents on what further action the Government can take to encourage the take-up of EVs. A total of 63% of respondents said they would like to see more investment in public charging points, just pipped by the 64% who said greater financial incentives – even though the Plug-in Car Grants have just been reduced. Meanwhile 30% said about the introduction of more Clean Air Zones and 27% ticked the box for new legislation that encourages businesses to move to fully electric company car or commercial vehicle fleets in the next five years.
Alison Bell continued: “The expansion of the UK’s national charging network, ever-improving battery performance and the falling cost of EVs are helping to make the technology an increasingly popular choice for fleets.”
