Due in showrooms in October, the second generation of the brand’s flagship SUV is available in three grades, priced from £34,700 for the hybrid version and £40,995 for the inaugural fully electric model.

It’s the first Vauxhall to use the new STLA Medium ‘BEV-by-Design’ platform from parent group Stellantis. Also the basis for the new Peugeot E-5008, this enables the arrival of the electric version, which reinforces Vauxhall’s pledge that all its cars and vans will be available with a fully electric version by the end of 2024.

The new platform also delivers more space – the new Grandland is 17cm larger than outgoing model and has 550 litres of boot capacity, up by 36 litres and rising to 1,645 litres with the 40:20:40 folding seats fully down. The interior comes with 35 litres of storage compartments, including a new ‘Pixel Box’ illuminated translucent glass cubby, complete with a smartphone charging pad on certain trims.

The hybrid version features a familiar powertrain from the Stellantis stable, teaming up a 136hp 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with a 28hp electric motor and 48V technology. It’s able to drive in electric mode in urban environments. Paired with a new six-speed dual clutch transmission, it has an official WLTP CO2 figure of 125g/km, economy of 51.4mpg and is capable of 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds.

The first-ever Grandland Electric features a 210hp motor and a 73kWh battery. Also kitted out with energy-saving features such as a heat pump as standard, it can travel up to 325 miles on a single charge (WLTP figure) with 0-62mph taking 9.0 seconds.

The BEV-native STLA Medium platform and new flat battery packaging design will also enable next year’s launch of a Long-Range version with a larger 98kWh battery and an estimated range of 435 miles. Drivers will be able to choose from three levels of regenerative braking using the steering wheel paddles, while the battery can be re-charged to 80% in around only 26 minutes at a rapid charger.

Both the hybrid and fully electric versions are available in Design, GS and Ultimate trims. Highlights include Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD headlamps and advanced infotainment options such as a 16-inch driver-orientated touchscreen.

Design models come with Eco LED headlights as standard, plus LED taillights and a body colour rear spoiler. Electric versions add to this with wider front and rear wheel arch cladding and a high gloss finish for the lower body cladding. Infotainment features include a 10-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Design trim also features front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone electronic climate control, an electric parking brake and power-folding door mirrors with welcome puddle lighting. Driver assist technologies include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition.

GS trim is priced at £36,650 for the hybrid and £43,145 for the fully electric model. It delivers the 3D Vizor with illuminated Griffin and Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD headlamps. It’s also marked out with diamond-cut 19-inch alloy wheels and a gloss black finish for the roof, rear spoiler and front and rear bumpers. Infotainment is upgraded to a 16-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone charging, while the GS also gets satellite navigation as standard, the Pixel Box and ambient interior lighting, plus heated front seats that are approved by Germany’s AGR campaign and a heated steering wheel.

The top-rung Ultimate trim is priced at £38,400 for the hybrid and £45,195 in electric guise. It marks the addition of a panoramic glass roof, a heated windscreen and a powered hands-free tailgate, while Electric models feature larger 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. The interior is upgraded with a head-up display for the driver and a Focal Hi-fi audio system. Driver safety enhancements include Drive Assist 2.0, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist and a 360-degree surround view parking camera.
