First announced in January 2021 and reviving the branding from the iconic Renault 5 launched in 1972, the electric city car forms as key part of Renault plans to become a tech, service and clean energy brand under the Renaulution strategy.

Now called the 5 E-Tech, it’s due to be priced around €25,000 (around £21,600), which positions it on a par with B-segment hybrids.

The new model will be sold with two battery options, including one with a capacity of 52kWh, for a range of around 250 miles (400km) WLTP. A second 40kWh battery will become available at a later date.

It will be the first vehicle built on the new AmpR Small platform – formerly CMF-B EV – sitting some 3.92m long and with multi-link rear suspension, normally used on vehicles further up the market.

The preview images show details of the headlights while the air intake used on the bonnet of the historic model is replaced by a charge indicator light forming the number ‘5’ when the vehicle is fully charged.

Equipped with a bidirectional onboard charger, the Renault 5 E-Tech will be the brand’s first production vehicle to feature V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology, which will allow drivers to save money on charging and cut their overall electricity bill, by selling electricity back to the grid. Supported by Mobilize, the V2G technology will be available first in France and Germany in 2024 and then in the UK in 2025.

A teaser campaign will start in December, revealing more design details.

Technologies include ‘Reno’, Renault’s official avatar, which provides a “next-generation humanised co-driver [that] will deliver a digital experience that fully immerses users in the world of Renault, for new driving and onboard experiences”.

Ahead of the reveal, Renault 5 fans and enthusiasts will be able to join R5 R Pass, an exclusive skip-the-line programme available in seven European countries. Members will be able to place their orders before everyone else and be among the first to take delivery of their new car. Available at a cost of €150 (£130), the R5 R Pass will be available from www.renault.fr/r5 and in the seven participating countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands).

Fabrice Cambolive, CEO Renault brand, said: “Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a cult icon redesigned for the modern age. We pulled out all the stops for this engaging car, designed and built in France. With its cheerful design and new-generation technologies, it’s out to make electric vehicles more affordable in Europe.”
