Shell Recharge Solutions, previously known as NewMotion, has reached a major milestone as its UK public charging network exceeds 10,000 charging connections.

Shell Recharge Solutions’ public roaming network now exceeds 10,000 charging connections

It means that the Shell Recharge roaming network now provides access to over a fifth of the total 49,865 public charging connections in the UK, under latest Zap-Map data.

EV users can now drive from Newquay in Cornwall to Aberdeen and charge their vehicle with just the Shell Recharge charge card or app.

It’s part of Shell’s work to expand its roaming agreements to enable easy access to charging via interoperability.

Data cited by the firm reveals 40% of EV drivers are unable to install a charge point at their home while 15% can’t access charging at the workplace. But nearly half (45%) of UK electric vehicle drivers carry two or more charge cards to enable them to charge on the go.

Euan Moir, sales manager UK from Shell Recharge Solutions, said: “Interoperability between the public charge points installed by different companies is key for the future of the EV industry and to enhance the customer experience. We have worked hard to get agreements in place with 21 roaming partners in the UK, who between them have 10,000 public charge points. EV drivers can now use all of these chargers with the Shell Recharge charge card and app. We are determined to overcome barriers to EV adoption by making it as easy as possible for drivers to charge up with one card or app.”

Shell’s work on expanding its public roaming network includes rapid charging; it now offers access to 1,500 rapid chargers, including 526 charge points operated by GeniePoint and recently added to Shell Recharge.

The Shell network also includes more than 4,500 on-street charge points installed and operated by Ubitricity, acquired by Shell in 2021.

Shell’s target is to operate over 500,000 charge points globally by 2025, including ultra-fast charge points on its forecourts. The plans include 50,000 on-street EV charging points across the UK by the end of 2025, which will be installed by Ubitricity.
