Smart shows off #5 electric SUV ahead of global premiere

Smart has showcased its upcoming #5 electric SUV, which makes its world debut on 28 August.

The line-up is expected to include a c.340-mile long-range model and a top-rung AWD version with 646hp

The all-new model – pronounced ‘hashtag five’ – marks the revitalised brand’s third fully electric car following the #1 and #3, and expands the Mercedes-Benz and Geely JV into a new segment.

Smart’s most spacious and versatile vehicle to date, the #5 was previewed earlier this year in concept form at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. It’s now teased in production form to reveal its focus on new target groups and “consumers with an active lifestyle”.

The initial sketches of the new model, which has been penned by Mercedes-Benz Design, show that it carries over the concept’s boxy, upright silhouette and distinctive roofline, in contrast to the more curvaceous #1 and #3.

The new model has also undergone “rigorous” off-road and winter tests earlier this year, testing performance of the electric powertrain, battery charging capability of the batteries and driving dynamics and safety systems, while also showcasing its skills for more outdoorsy types.

Technical details of the new model haven’t been revealed yet but it’s expected to deliver four versions that include single-motor, rear-wheel drive variants and dual-motor, all-wheel drive models. The range-topping AWD version will deliver up to 646hp of power and is likely to be badged as a Brabus.

Previous reports suggest a range of up to 550km (some 340 miles) for the long-range version, while the line-up will also feature an 800V architecture that will enable ultra-rapid charging.

Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe GmbH, said: “The #5 is a great expansion of our existing portfolio and will make the Smart brand an attractive choice for more and more customers in Europe.”

Now co-owned by Mercedes-Benz along with Volvo parent Geely and repositioned as an all-electric carmaker, Smart’s business model hands styling to the Mercedes-Benz Design network while Geely takes care of engineering and manufacture.

The world premiere of the Smart #5 will take place in Brisbane, Australia on 28 August. The European market launch is planned for 2025.
