Suttie’s seven days… with a Genesis GV60

A year on from our original test, can Genesis’ mid-sized fully electric crossover still hit the spot? Road tester Al Suttie takes to Scotland’s highways and byways to find out.

Monday

It’s a year since I last drove the Genesis GV60 and a lot has happened in the EV world since then. New cars have arrived, others updated, and the pace of change in this part of the market is simply breathtaking. A good time then to come back to one of my favourite EVs and see if it still stacks up or has been superseded by new rivals. Either way, the GV60 Sport Plus sitting outside promises an interesting week.

Tuesday

I’ll let you into a secret – I was supposed to be driving a Ford Mustang Mach-E this week, but there were some logistical hiccoughs. Luckily, the Genesis stepped into the breach and it’s already rewarding with a comfortable, hushed drive up the motorway to Perth this morning. It’s a regular jaunt for me, but the quiet of the Genesis’ cabin highlights how much noise some other cars generate.

Wednesday

Childish – me? Well, maybe a wee bit this evening when I took my son and a couple of his mates to football training. They liked the GV60’s swish cabin but when they asked about the Boost button on the steering wheel, what was I supposed to do? Thankfully, an empty stretch of road presented itself at the right moment and three teenagers were left laughing about 490hp-worth of acceleration. I enjoyed it too.

Thursday

Time to charge up the GV60 and the first rapid charger I visited that was convenient for my trip turned out to be broken – it was a 50kW BP Pulse station. More annoying than it not working was waiting a long time on the helpline number with no answer. The end result was parking two miles out of my way and heading into town on foot and back. At least the second charger was quick and efficient.

Friday

As well as its ride comfort and refinement, and undoubted turn of pace, the Genesis GV60 is good fun to drive. It handles nimbly and never feels anything less than sure-footed on Scotland’s uneven and now autumnal roads. Four-wheel drive helps in this Sport Plus model, of course, but the GV60 has an innate sense of balance missing from many EVs of this ilk.

Saturday

The Suttie family’s new Austin Seven

A clash of motoring opposites, or perhaps a fantastic complement of vehicles this morning.

I’ve been on the hunt for an Austin Seven for a long time and this lovely two-seat tourer came up for sale relatively close to home.

The GV60 made easy work of the early morning drive there and the sat-nav was spot on, too.

And, yes, I bought the Austin, so now have a very different experience to the Genesis to look forward to.

Sunday

This reacquaintance with the Genesis GV60 has only served to confirm in my mind that it’s one of the best mid-sized premium brand EVs. It comes with lengthy list of equipment as standard, it feels every inch the luxury car, and there are loads of delightful little details for the driver and passengers. It also turns in a decent driving range and quick charging, so it’s a very sound fleet choice.
